Automotive electrification has undoubtedly been one of the hottest trends in the automotive industry lately. The announcements by the major multinationals like Volvo committing to the EV only range from 2020, Ford's partnerships with Mahindra to explore growth opportunities in India, huge EV drive from Chinese Government and the emergence of visionaries like Tesla and FF have all been strong indicators that the industry is taking firm steps towards the emissions-free automotive future.

According to the International Energy Agency Global EV Outlook 2017 report the sales of EVs across the globe hit a record high last year, with over 750 thousand sales worldwide.

Further analysis of the trends, markets and policies indicates that there is a good chance that the electric car stock will range between 9 million and 20 million by 2020 and between 40 million and 70 million by 2025 according to the same report.

With such positive prospects for the sector, the OEMs still have to figure out how to increase competitiveness of the EVs and close the cost gap between EVs and Internal Combustion Engines.

As battery manufacturers are working hard on decreasing the costs of the batteries, the OEMs are on the look out for solutions that help to balance trade-offs between the overall weight, range, cost, aesthetics and most importantly customer preferences.
